How This Overweight Bride-To-Be, who was left mortified by ’embarrassing’ proposal photos, loses 110lbs (50kg) in a year – and unveils her New Look on her wedding day…
- Haley Smith, 24, from Amarillo, Texas, weighed 227 lbs last July
- When her boyfriend Matt proposed she ‘cried her eyes out’ at photos of her size
- She realized she needed to get in shape for her big day
- By her wedding day she had lost 110 lbs (50 kg) and stunned everybody in her wedding dress
A newlywed who was left close to tears by ’embarrassing’ proposal photos shed almost 110 lbs (50 kg) before her big day.
Haley Smith, 24, from Amarillo, Texas, tipped the scales at 277 lbs (125 kg) when her boyfriend Matt Smith popped the question last July.
And despite the happy news, the psychology student ‘cried her eyes out’ when she saw her size in photos from the day – and refused to post them online, even if it was the happiest day of her life at that moment…
Haley started to follow a diet, combining it with a 3 times a week healthy exercise routine (provided by the diet as well). She persevered and soon working out became a habit. After that she even increased her routine to five times a week and included strength trainings as well as cardio.
Haley, a post-graduate student in psychology, said: ‘I hated how I looked in my proposal pictures.
‘I saw the pictures and cried my eyes out – I didn’t even recognize myself.’
She added: ‘I wouldn’t post them because I was so ashamed of how much I had let myself go – which is sad because it was one of the happiest days of my life.
‘I didn’t want to be embarrassed of my wedding pictures, so I knew I needed a change.’
Haley struggled with her weight as a child, but it was at university that her overeating spiraled out of control.
As an ’emotional eater’ she would binge on crisps, sweets and carbs.
Determined to slim down for her wedding, the blonde beauty ditched her junk-food diet for a healthy and balanced weight loss diet. Not to only lose weight but also to keep the weight off!
Now she exercises for a few hours every week and has found that her poor health – such as excess sweating, joint pains and pre-diabetes – has improved.
Last Saturday, the childhood sweethearts tied the knot and this time Haley felt ‘beautiful’ in her wedding dress at 168 lbs (76 kg).
Because before Haley suffered from high blood pressure, poor complexion, heartburn, and got headaches practically every day! That’s why she vowed to lose the weight after seeing the images from her boyfriend’s proposal.
She said also YES to herself, promising to lose weight, hoping to look a bit more ‘normal’ as a bride – but felt beautiful in her dress on the day itself…
She added: ‘I was overweight my whole life. I was a chubby little kid and teen. In college is when the real weight gain began.
‘I bought whatever looked good and had an unlimited college dining meal plan – so I went crazy.
‘Just about anything could trigger me to eat.
‘I was and still can be an emotional eater. I ate when I was sad, bored, stressed or happy and wanted to celebrate.’
Haley’s overeating began to affect her health, which in turn affected her social life and her self-confidence.
She said: ‘I was tired, slow, sweaty, and out of breath after just about anything.’
‘I couldn’t sleep, had aches and pains all over my body, high blood pressure, poor complexion, heartburn, and got headaches practically every day.’
‘I missed out on so many things because of it.’
‘I avoided the pool or beach like my life depended on it, and I missed several family activities like bike rides or hiking trips because I actually couldn’t do them.’
‘In turn, this hurt me socially because you can only turn your friends down so many times before they stop including you in plans.’
‘I also sweat constantly – it was so embarrassing.’
‘I remember one time I sweat so badly I told people someone poured water down my back because I was too embarrassed to tell them that my sweat soaked my shirt and pants.’
‘I cried like a baby when I got home. I didn’t want to go anywhere because I was ashamed of my size.’
‘I was also worried about stinking, getting out of breath in conversations, and not fitting places.’
‘I would even say that I went in and out of cycles of depression. All of those have gone away in the last year as I’ve lose weight.’
Haley’s wake-up call came last July in the form of Matt’s proposal.
She revealed: ‘I was tired of getting out of breath walking to class.’
‘I was fed up with getting chaffing on all of my body parts that rubbed and sweat.’
‘So I decided to make my engagement year the year I made a change.’
‘Most of all, I wanted to pick a wedding dress that I loved, not one I settled for because I wanted to hide my body.’
‘I wanted to show off my wedding pictures because I looked amazing.’

Haley said: ‘Now, a little over a year later, I work out daily, usually for nearly an hour.
‘You have to start small to make a habit and encourage yourself.’
‘I did the same with food. I picked two habits that I wanted to change and started slowly.’
Haley also credited her new-hubby with her transformation.
She said: ‘He even loved me enough to propose to me at my highest weight when I was feeling unlovable.’
‘So he has seen me at my best and my worst.’
‘Whenever I decided to make the lifestyle change, it wasn’t just hard on me because he was having to give up on a lot of things and change, too.’
‘He never complained. He was always supportive and eager to try whatever I was wanting to start.’
Haley’s and Matt’s big day went perfectly, and now the couple are honeymooning in New Zealand – something that would have been impossible for Haley 100 lbs ago.
She added: ‘My dress exceeded all my expectations.’
‘I never thought I would look as good as I did. I expected and hoped just to look “normal,” but I felt beautiful – like a real bride should. I’m so excited about the trip.’
‘It’s going to be a trip of a lifetime.’
