Applesauce

Whipping up homemade applesauce is a breeze, serving as a delightful addition to any meal as a side dish or a sweet finale for dessert.

  • 3 ingredients
  • 45 minutes
  • 10 Servings

Ingredients

7 apples, cut into quarters
1/2 cup of water
1/4 cup of sugar

Directions

  1. Thoroughly wash the apples and quarter them. You can choose to peel the apples, but keep in mind that leaving the skin on will retain more dietary fiber.
  2. Place the apple quarters and water into a saucepan. Bring the mixture to a boil. As soon as it reaches boiling point, reduce the heat to low.
  3. Let the mixture simmer over low heat for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the apples are tender. Make sure to stir occasionally to prevent the apples from sticking to the bottom of the saucepan.
  4. Stir in the sugar and continue heating the mixture until the sugar is completely dissolved.

Notes

Choose the Right Apples: Not all apples are created equal when it comes to making applesauce. Some good options include Golden Delicious, McIntosh, or Fuji, as they are sweet and break down well during cooking.

Adjust the Sweetness: Feel free to adjust the amount of sugar based on the sweetness of your apples and your personal preference. You can always start with less and add more to taste.

Add Extra Flavor: The cinnamon is optional but highly recommended for additional flavor. You could also consider adding a splash of vanilla extract or a squeeze of fresh lemon juice for a little brightness.

Chunky vs Smooth: For a chunkier applesauce, mash the cooked apples with a potato masher instead of a blender or food processor. If you prefer a smoother consistency, blend the cooked apples until you reach your desired texture.

Preserve Your Applesauce: If you want to store your applesauce for longer periods, consider canning it. Make sure to use sterilized jars and follow proper canning procedures.

Serve It Your Way: Applesauce can be served warm, at room temperature, or chilled based on your preference. It's versatile and can be used in various ways - as a side dish, a dessert, a topping for pancakes, a substitute for oil in baking, and more.
