Baked Tofu

Infused with ginger, soy sauce, and garlic, this tofu dish brims with savory flavors. Packed with protein and suitable for a plant-based diet, it's a hearty and satisfying option.

  • 5 ingredients
  • 40 minutes
  • 4 Servings

Ingredients

2 tablespoons of soy sauce
1 clove of garlic, minced (or 1/4 teaspoon of garlic powder)
1 teaspoon of fresh ginger, minced (optional)
1 teaspoon of vegetable oil
1 package (14 ounces) of firm or extra-firm tofu, water-packed and drained

Directions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit, and line a rimmed baking sheet with foil for easy cleanup.
  2. Drain the water from your tofu package. Wrap the tofu block in paper towels to absorb additional moisture, and let it sit for about 5 minutes.
  3. While the tofu is draining, create your marinade. Combine soy sauce, minced garlic, minced ginger (if using), and vegetable oil in a small bowl.
  4. Cut your tofu block into slices, approximately 1/2 inch thick. Arrange these slices on your foil-lined baking sheet.
  5. Pour the soy sauce mixture evenly over the tofu slices. Use a spatula or pancake turner to gently flip each slice, ensuring both sides are well coated with the marinade.
  6. Bake the tofu in your preheated oven for 15 minutes. Then, carefully flip each slice over and bake for another 15 minutes. The tofu should reach a light golden brown color and firm up in texture.
  7. Serve the baked tofu hot as a meat substitute, or let it cool and slice or cube it to add into stir-fries, fried rice dishes, soups, or salads. This versatile tofu dish is a great way to incorporate protein into a variety of meals, especially if you follow a plant-based diet.

Notes

Draining Tofu: To achieve the best texture, it's crucial to drain your tofu properly. Some people even press their tofu to get rid of extra moisture. You can use a tofu press or place a heavy object on top of the tofu (while it's wrapped in paper towels) to help squeeze out the water.

Marinating Tofu: Tofu is like a sponge and absorbs flavors really well. If you have time, consider letting the tofu marinate for a few hours or overnight. This will allow the flavors of soy sauce, garlic, and ginger to penetrate deeper into the tofu.

Baking Tofu: Tofu can stick to the baking sheet even when it's lined with foil. To prevent this, consider using a non-stick baking mat or lightly greasing the foil before placing the tofu on it.

Using Leftover Marinade: If you have leftover marinade, you can brush it onto the tofu halfway through the baking process for additional flavor.

Storing Leftover Tofu: Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator. The tofu will continue to absorb the flavors as it sits, making it even tastier the next day.
